On August 23 and 24, the International Trade Center in Hazerswoude-Dorpwill, the Netherlands, will suit up for another year of Plantarium/Groen-Direkt. Visitors can discover the most striking performers among the many novelties that have been registered.
About Plants has the pleasure of introducing visitors to an outstanding variety, boosting color and vigor. Acer palmatum Royal Garnet (‘Opstal11’PBR) is a beautiful little tree with feathery, garnet-colored leaves that change to the fieriest orange-red colors in autumn that even surprise with a blue shade. The increasingly popular Mad About Mangave series will compete for the Best Market Innovation: a user-friendly product with a perfect shape, ensuring long-lasting enjoyment due to the plants’ robustness. The series can be admired at the FN Kempen stand.
Skimmiakwekerij Bolwijn B.V. will present Skimmia Gold Series® on a stem approximately 60 cm tall. This exclusive product represents the pinnacle of what is achievable in terms of cultivation and will make for a great competitor for the Novelty Market Innovation Award.
New introductions
New for 2023 is the stunning Perovskia atriplicifolia’ Prime Time’ PBR: an early-season blooming Russian sage with large, dense lavender-purple flower spikes and grey-green aromatic foliage. Not only is Prime Time an early bloomer, the flower spikes actually retain their color well into fall. Making for long-lasting color from July all the way through October. You can get to know this top performer at the stands of Boomkamp and Lucassen.
At Hoogeveen Plants and Leybeart, the last addition to the impressive Everpanthus®-series by De Wet Plant Breeders, Agapanthus Everpanthus® Midnight Sky (‘DWAgHyb01’PBR), can be admired. Midnight Sky is intensely colored – and it’s not just the colors that are intense: the same goes for its flowering. Midnight Sky has a better growth rate than most Agapanthus and produces more flower heads. Both flowers and buds of Midnight Sky immediately catch the eye with their intense, dark purple-blue colors.
New to the game is Clematis Sparkler: a stunning variety with semi-double white flowers with creamy stripes and eye-catching red stamens. This double-flowered Clematis is a wonderful hybrid, presented by Marco de Wit, that shows off its flowers in spring and steals the show with a single-flowered repeat by the end of summer. Sparkler boasts blooms early in the year and creates an extra-long season of interest with its rebloom. A delight to have in any landscape.
The Wall of Fame
Visitors of the trade show can admire earlier winners at the Wall of Fame. Tradescantia andersoniana JS® Brainstorm and Mangave Mad about Mangave®’ Red Wing’ PBR have earned their place with a bronze reward: Brainstorm got awarded at Plantarium|Groen-Direkt 2023, while ‘Red Wing’ got the honors at SVB-KVBC 2021. Buddleja davidii Butterfly Candy® Little Ruby (‘BotEx 006’PBR) was awarded Gold at SVB-KVBC 2021, and Best Novelty and Lomandra longifolia White Sands (‘Roma 13’PBR) was the public’s favorite at the Groen-Direkt show in 2023.
