Spring Festival 2023: Guangzhou flower boat fair revives age-old tradition

Flower fairs have been a quintessential New Year’s tradition in south China, dating back at least a hundred years. After three years of social-distancing rules causing major events to be suspended, the traditional markets are back.

“There are plenty of flower markets happening across Guangzhou this time of the year, but this may be the only one taking place on the water.”

“Back in the day, flower farmers would go throughout the Pearl River Delta through Guangdong Province and go up to the shore selling the flowers. That was kind of the main business back in the day. Only in the last century has it become more closely associated with the Spring Festival.”
