Sion’s new Phalaenopsis production site in Edmonton, Canada

Sion and Bevo Farms are kicking off the year with a move to Edmonton, Canada. The collaboration between Sion and Bevo Farms—which commenced in May 2022—means that Sion can now supply its customers in North America with cuttings in plug or half-grown plants, in addition to cuttings in laboratory cups. This month, all the production will move from Vancouver to Edmonton. This larger and generously equipped production site offers benefits that are rarely deployed in Phalaenopsis cultivation, so the two partners are particularly proud to share this news.

Edmonton production site is equipped with a wide array of conveniences
The location in Edmonton was acquired from a company engaged in cannabis cultivation. The site was built in 2018 and equipped with a range of conveniences. For example, the greenhouse is fully enclosed, with no vents, and all products are on tables on dense concrete floors, guaranteeing controlled air and moisture quality and excellent hygiene. “If we were to build a new greenhouse ourselves, we would have to choose a more ‘standard’ version for cost reasons. But this acquisition allows us to use all these high-quality extras, ensuring an optimal growing climate and a low risk of viruses. In the process, we are increasing from 5.6 to 7.2 hectares, so we are ready to grow for the future!” Peter Kuijvenhoven, COO of Bevo Farms.

Invitation to Stand 533 at TPIE Expo
From January 18-20, 2023, Sion and Bevo will have a joint exhibition stand at the Tropical Plant International Expo (TPIE) in Tampa, Florida. At this venue, the partners are keen to personally engage with their customers, to share more about the new location and the collaboration, and to see where they can support customers. Customers and interested parties are welcome to visit the partners’ exhibition stand: stand 533.

Starting in January, customers can expect delivery in plug trays, with half-grown plants in September.

The collaboration enables the two companies to supply the North American market with cuttings material in plugs or half-grown plants with or without spikes, in addition to Phalaenopsis cuttings in laboratory cups. The products can be ordered by color as well as by variety from Sion’s wide assortment and that of fellow breeders under the name “Sion Breeders in the Spotlight.” Most of all, the short local delivery time of 2 to 4 days enables a tight delivery schedule, allowing year-round weekly delivery or just a large delivery in peak periods for the holidays. The first plug material in plug trays is expected to be delivered from January 2023, followed by the half-grown plant material with or without branches from September 2023.

About the collaboration
In May 2022, Sion Young Plants and Bevo Farms entered an exclusive cooperation for the propagation of Phalaenopsis. Bevo Farms is a nursery producing a range of products, including flowering plants and various young vegetable plants. It brings over 35 years of experience to the mix. Sion Young Plants is one of the top international breeders and propagators of Phalaenopsis. It provides an extensive assortment and marketing and sales expertise. “While Bevo Farms provides optimal propagation and logistics, what we’ve got to offer is our ability to provide customers with cultivation advice, market information, and assortment selection.” Sales manager Randy van Paassen (Sion).
