“Red poinsettia varieties with guaranteed success every festive season”

Poinsettias are still the most popular pot plant for the Christmas period. Growers can choose from a diverse range of varieties to meet demand. Dümmen Orange offers three stand-out red varieties that will set every grower’s heart racing: Imperial Red, Freya, and Grande Italia.

These three red poinsettias are perfect team players—absolutely reliable in production and ideal for sustainable cultivation. The benefits of these properties are all the more evident when energy prices are on the up. Their wonderfully intense red bracts also make them a success within what is still the most prominent color segment for poinsettias.

Ideal for high-density cultivation
The strong V-shape of the popular Imperial Red variety makes it perfect for cultivation in high production densities. This medium-early red variety is also suitable for finishing in cooler temperatures and is, therefore, ideal for production in northern regions. Its eight-week response time and medium vigor make Imperial Red perfect for the end of November / beginning of December sales period. Whether in midi, standard, or maxi size, it catches the eye at the POS with its bright red bracts set above the contrasting dark green foliage. Its long-lasting cyathia also ensure that these wonderful poinsettias continue to delight consumers for a long time to come.

Low input requirements
Like Imperial Red, the red NanoBract variety Freya is an absolute gem in terms of cultivation density and low input requirements. It is exceptionally well suited to production in high volumes, and its V-shaped plant structure enables the use of high-density cultivation and sustainable production methods. This variety, which has medium-sized bracts in a distinct, vivid red, is ideal for cultivation in 12 cm pots. Nevertheless, the NanoBract variety can also be grown very successfully as mini or midi plants in 13 cm pots. Regardless of the pot size, the plant’s bright red bracts all stand at the same height and are still clearly visible even after sleeving, which takes very little time and effort.

Heat-tolerant and highly vigorous
Grande Italia—another V-shaped variety—certainly lives up to its name. Highly vigorous and heat-tolerant, it is ideal for cultivation in warmer regions such as Southern Europe. This Southern European regional ‘Poinsettia Champion’ is very economical to grow due to its low energy requirements, without leaving it susceptible to botrytis. The response time of this medium-early beauty is eight weeks, making it perfectly timed for the main sales weeks. Its bracts exhibit distinct early coloration, enabling the plants to be marketed earlier, and its slow-opening cyathia guarantee the plants’ high quality right through to purchase and beyond. Due to its vigorous growth habit, this attractive variety with dark red bracts is extremely well suited to cultivation in pot sizes from 14 cm through to trees.
