California Spring Trials 2023 is a wrap! Yesterday, Sunday, April 2, the 5-day event came to an end, and despite the challenging Californian weather leading up to the event, the energy was good at all trial ten sites.

Challenging weather
The weather in California has been a big challenge for many growers. There has been lots of rain, flooding, and even hail on the first days and weeks leading up to the event. We even heard that parts of California had seen more rain in the last four months than in the last ten years combined. It has been a challenge for many growers, particularly for the field crop/vegetable farmers. Also, during the event, growers were busy with the weather. “We have had heavy night-time rain for two of the days, which did create some evening work to keep things looking good, but all in all, our product could not have looked better for the show, so we were happy about that,” says Steve Jones of Green Fuse Botanicals.

On the positive side: Reservoirs are full!
But there is good news with all the rain; California’s reservoirs are full for the first time in 4 years. “That’s money in the bank for the western US nursery industry!”  The drought in California for the last ten years is officially declared over.

Positive vibes
The vibes at the show were positive. “There was a very good feeling from all the trial sites and a good energy,” says Scott Rusch of Express Seed Company, who visited all locations with the company’s InFlora Cut Flowers team. Jones: “We have had a very good turnout. Especially from retailers who are interested in seeing new offerings for their customers.” Also, Sirekit Mol of Beekenkamp is pleased: “It has been a great week connecting with our committed partners, our loyal customers, and friends of the industry. I was also pleased to see that besides the whole of clientele from North, Central, and South America, we also welcomed some Asian visitors as well.”
