New legislation for the packaging of fresh products has given the use of paper in the packaging of fruit, vegetables, and other horticultural products, an extra boost. At the upcoming Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Mediane will introduce, among other items, sealable and recyclable Paper banderoles.
Mediane introduced a sealable and recyclable paper already in 2017. With its own coating formula and by means of sourcing the right paper qualities, Mediane initially developed ‘Sealpap®’ for the production of conical paper sleeves for packing herbal plants and lettuce only.
Sealpap, sealable and recyclable paper
The next step was to develop the right coating and paper combination for the use on VFSS and HFFS packaging machines. A logical step, explains Sales & Marketing Director Robert van der Laan. “We supply a lot of flexible plastic films to the food and non-food industry. As soon as it became known that we would also be active in paper with Sealpap, the requests came naturally, and the customers discovered the applications themselves.”
Recyclable and disposable in the regular paper waste stream Sealpap has the necessary certificates. Van der Laan: “We have passed extensive tests at CTP and PTS, and we enforce the rules according to Din Certco DIN and ISO 14021.” Sealpap is produced from FSC® certified paper. Sealpap is being exported to all countries of the EU, USA and Australia.
“We coat on one or two sides, both ‘full-surface’ or ‘spot,’ thus minimizing the amount of coating even further if so required. A fully home-compostable coating is under development and will follow shortly, just like recycled paper versions and paper from agricultural waste.”
Sealpap wrap-around banderole
At the upcoming Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Mediane will introduce, amongst others, sealable and recyclable Paper banderoles. This product will be introduced under the name Sealpap ‘Wrap-Around,’ both unprinted and printed in up to 8 colors.
“Because we coat, print and cut paper, we see an excellent opportunity here,” says Van der Laan. “We already have a good road to market with our fresh produce activities. We want our Sealpap “wrap-around” banderole to be easy and widely accessible together with a transparent price setting and fast delivery, directly from producer to end-user. We believe this can be achieved through an ‘online web shop’ system. A relatively uncomplicated product such as a paper banderole is perfectly suitable to be marketed in this way”.
Mediane has more than ten years of experience with a B2B Web shop – Ordering Systems. An application that will soon be available for the Sealpap ‘Wrap-Around’ Banderol too. As a result, the product can be rolled out more quickly within the EU and USA and can be ordered online instantly.
“The paper banderole is a nice addition to the range of Sealpap products of conical sleeves, paper flow packs, and flow packs with a window. The end of the possibilities and applications is still nowhere in sight,” the team concludes.
