For many growers, Valentine’s Day is an important holiday and particularly for the ones growing roses. Ecuadorian rose grower Flores Verde shares a look back at this past and very positive Valentine’s Day. “We feel very fortunate that most of our flowers arrived on time and that the logistics involved with shipping, especially to the US, were working correctly,” they say. It was also the first year in which Flores Verdes was able to offer a commercial quantity of the new Fortune variety.
Fortune is a velvety dark red rose that is gaining popularity for its hardy petals and long vase life, they explain. “It is one of our star varieties and worked perfectly for Valentines. Often on Valentine’s, due to the number of flowers going through the airports, it is not uncommon to have some damaged flowers by the time they arrive at the final client. Fortune behaved extremely well in this regard. We have not had a single complaint, issue, nor a single instance of botrytis at all with Fortune.”
“We also have clients that prefer Fortune over any other red on the market, and this works well with our higher-end brand position. All in all, we are very happy with the results of this Valentine’s, and we believe that with hard work and a little bit of Fortune, next year will be even better. “
