Keeping the benches full after Spring is often a challenge for many growers and particularly nowadays, as growers are more careful planting large amounts of plants. But what if growers can fill their empty benches and be ready for additional sales in 10 weeks or even less? With the new program of PanAmerican Seed, called ‘Sow Fast. Grow Fast.™’, they can easily plan for additional shoulder season sales. It was introduced at the California Spring Trials at the start of this month. “And the program will benefit growers all over the world,” says Eva Wijnker-van der Cruijsen-, Event & Project Coordinator at PanAmerican Seed.
Lisa Lacy, Product Manager with Impatiens Beacon, one of the varieties in the ‘Sow Fast. Grow Fast.’ program.
The program currently consists of 113 varieties, including 33 combos and 20 series. All varieties will be ready from seed till flowering in 10 weeks or less. “We looked at our assortment and made a list of our varieties that we have with a crop time of 10 weeks or less. So all varieties in the program are of good and proven genetics. And as PanAmerican Seed is expanding the assortment continuously, the number of varieties in this program will, in turn, increase as well.”
Benefits growers worldwide
According to Wijnker-van der Cruijsen, growers from all over the world will benefit from the ‘Sow Fast. Grow Fast.’ program. “When the crop time is shorter, costs are lower, and sales are more frequent, and this is something growers all over the world are looking for,” she says. And the introduction comes at exactly the right time. “In Europe, for example, growers are not only dealing with inflation, like in the US, but they are also affected by the energy crises – the reason why many planted fewer plants – and the bad spring weather which limited their sales. Now, they are looking for opportunities to generate additional shoulder season sales, so the ideal moment to introduce this program.” But also, in those countries where the focus is on low-cost and high-quantity, Wijnker-van der Cruijsen expects that this program will generate a lot of interest.
The program was introduced and first presented at the California Spring Trials, but it is available worldwide. In June, they will also present it at their location during the FlowerTrials.
