Happy New Year! Our best-read articles of 2022

The new year has started, but before looking forward to what 2023 has to offer, we would like to reflect on 2022. What were the most popular topics? Which articles were the best read?

Russia-Ukraine war
The Russia-Ukraine war has been and still is dominating the news globally. And therefore, it comes as no surprise that three war-related articles are ranked in our top 5, with the news that a Ukrainian cut flower grower near Kyiv have been hit by a Russian airstrike ranked number one. The other articles ranked third and fourth, are Russia-Ukraine war hinders flower export and Update: How the floral industry is affected by the war in Ukraine

Strikes in Ecuador
The second best-read article is the article about the protests in Ecuador in June, which costed the flower sector $2 million a day. After 18 days of violent strikes, Ecuador’s government and the country’s main Indigenous group have reached an agreement.

Ornamental industry in the Philippines
Our readers also seem to be interested in the ornamental industry in the Philippines, as the fifth best-read article is this article: “The ornamentals industry in the Philippines is flourishing” In this country, the demand for ornamental plants is rising at a ‘fast rate,’ driven by the population’s increasing purchasing power and the working population, who are mostly millennials, choosing to acquire more condominium units, as reported by the International Association Of Horticultural Producers.

Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is one of the most important holidays for many growers, particularly for cut roses growers. And articles about this holiday usually attract a lot of attention. Also, in 2022, this article was ranked sixth in our best-read articles list: Lack of air freight and expensive supplies hamper Valentine’s sales. In the article, the situation in Kenya, South America, Eastern, and Western Europe is highlighted. As the title reveals, the major challenges for last year’s Valentine’s Day were the lack of air freight and the expensive supplies.

Online sourcing platform
During the pandemic, more and more have gone online, and for many companies, online sales skyrocketed. This, combined with the increasing interest in shortening the chain, new buying platforms are growing. The interest in new platforms is high, and that is reflected in our reader statistics, as the article from online sourcing platform 247flowers (Online sourcing platform that combines transparency, digitalization, and lowest prices) is ranked seventh in our best-read articles list.

IFTF
Every year, photo reports pop up in our best-read chart, also this year. There was a lot of interest in the IFTF trade show that took place last November in Vijfhuizen. The FloralDaily team was also at the show to hand out the Buyers Guides and make a photo report of the show. The article about the show and the photo report again reached our top 10.

Dog scouting pests
Growers are always looking for new and innovative ways to protect their crops from insects and diseases, and an innovative way to do that is with dogs, who respond to the odor of greenhouse pests. So, we end this top 10 with this article: “Each insect has its own odor, and the dogs will always notice.”
