China’s flower trade in 2022: exports hit a new high and imports fell slightly

In 2022, the international market was complex and changeable, and the impact of the pandemic continued. China’s flower trade withstood heavy pressure, exports hit a new high, and imports declined slightly. According to customs statistics, in 2022, flower exports reached nearly US$477 million in China, a year-on-year increase of 4.17%, hitting a record high. Imports reached nearly US$234 million, a year-on-year decrease of 0.68%.

Except for seedlings and bulbs, other types of flower products showed different growth rates.

*Kingpin market

In 2022, China’s flowers were exported to 112 countries and regions, and the top ten markets accounted for about 81.86% of the total export value. The export value to Vietnam rose by 169.79% year-on-year, ranking second, and the export value to the Netherlands had the largest year-on-year decrease of 25.9%.

*Key provinces and cities

In 2022, Guangdong, Yunnan, and Fujian ranked among the top three in terms of flower exports, accounting for about 69.96% of the total flower exports in China. Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Guangxi were among the top ten provinces and cities in terms of export volume and showed substantial growth.


*Major source of imports

In 2022, China’s flower import sources included 58 countries and regions. The Netherlands, Japan, and Thailand were the most important import sources for China, accounting for about 75% of the total flower imports. Among the top ten import sources, except the Netherlands and Peru, the import volume increased year-on-year, and the rest showed varying degrees of decline.

In 2022, Yunnan’s flower imports were leading in China, and Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Beijing ranked among the top in terms of imports, but they all show varying degrees of decline year-on-year.
