Dr. Ami Appelbaum, chairman of the Israel Innovation Authority, recently visited Hishtil’s facility in Nehalim, Israel. He met with Hishtil’s CEO, Amit Dagan, Business Development and project manager, Moti Dagan, and the Director of Operations in Israel, Baruch Dagan. They discussed the company’s international and local activities in the horticulture industry. As part of the tour, Dr. Appelbaum talked with Hishtil’s VP of R&D, Nadav Pass, and R&D Manager, Dr. Eyal Klein, about the ‘SMART’ consortium.

The “SMART” consortium was funded and operated under the “MAGNET” program of the Israeli innovation authority and is considered their flag program.

Together with many partners from the leading academic research constitutions in Israel and industrial export companies in the field of agriculture, plastics, and start-ups, Hishtil led this consortium for the last three years.

The research focused on utilizing micro-chemical technology for coating and protecting seedlings and vegetative propagating materials against pathogens and pests.

This advanced technology boasts significant capabilities for combatting pests and their vectors, paving the way for Israel to increase its exports of agricultural products and technologies. The project developments will also be incorporated into the product portfolio of supporting industries, such as crop protection, postharvest handling, plastic, and packaging, while fostering a suitable habitat for them.

“We are honored to lead the ‘SMART’ project, which offers an innovative approach to mitigating biotic stresses in agriculture and supports the sustainability of genetic solutions. Most importantly, this project significantly benefits the environment, reducing millions of tons of agricultural waste and pesticide use in the farming ecosystem. From the outset, we have led groundbreaking agriculture in Israel and are proud to continue on this path for future generations”, Hishtil’s VP of R&D, Nadav Pass says.
