As the lively floral colors of spring adorn the landscape across the Netherlands, nature enthusiasts and flower lovers, on the other hand, eagerly anticipate the opening of Keukenhof for its 2024 season. Keukenhof, often referred to as the ‘Garden of Europe,’ is a world-renowned floral delight that showcases the beauty of the country’s millions of flowers.

Located in Lisse, just a short distance from Amsterdam, Keukenhof is an enchanting destination that offers a banquet for, virtually, all the senses. In 2024 this ‘Garden of Europe’ – which is one of the world’s largest flower gardens – celebrates its 75th anniversary and its opening for the season formally heralds the onset of spring and hence a celebration of nature’s vernal magnificence.

Introducing the ‘Garden of Europe’

Interestingly, the name ‘Keukenhof’ has a rather unassuming origin. In Dutch, it translates to ‘Kitchen Garden’. But don’t get deceived by the simple name as this garden is far more enchanting than your typical kitchen garden!

For starters, Keukenhof is the independent, international showcase for the Dutch floricultural sector, with a special emphasis on flower bulbs. In the space of eight weeks, it demonstrates what the Dutch floricultural sector has to offer. Usually, the focus in the park is on the seven million spring flowering bulbs.

At least one hundred flower bulb companies display their products and five hundred growers present a vast variety of cut flowers and pot plants at more than twenty flower shows on the sprawling 79-acre park that boasts an impressive collection of colorful flowers. Every year, experienced gardeners diligently plant and cultivate these flowers (from bulbs), creating a spectacular display of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and other spring flowers.

The park is divided into various themed gardens, each offering a unique and immersive experience. From the enchanting English landscape garden to the romantic Japanese garden, Keukenhof presents a diverse array of floricultural and gardening masterworks.

What Wonders of Flowers Will You Discover?

Flowering at Keukenhof goes correspondingly to that in nature. That is why it may be difficult to tell in advance which time is the best for one to visit based on their specific and individual floral preferences. The crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, and early tulips may, for instance, flower at the start of the season. Other flowers, such as the larger tulips, may flower later in the season.

Nonetheless, there is always something pleasant for flower enthusiasts whenever they visit the garden. For example, upon entering Keukenhof, guests are usually welcomed by a riot of floral colors and fragrances from the carefully arranged flower fields. These fields form elaborate patterns and designs that proudly showcase the artistry and creativity that went into their creation by the gardeners.

Endless rows of tulips in a range of diverse colors and shades create an exciting spectacle to witness, while sweet-smelling flowers like hyacinths and daffodils add their own charm to the floral work of art. The park’s pavilions also house interesting flower shows, featuring exquisite arrangements and inspiring floral designs.

Such floral shows include the tulip and hyacinth show, anthurium and orchid show, freesia and chrysanthemum show, a rose show, daffodil, and special bulbs show, alstroemeria and calla show, gerbera, and lisianthus show, and a carnation and summer flowers show. These shows will run during the entire course of the event in the pavilions at Keukenhof.

In essence, the floral festival offers a truly unmatched floral experience. An experience where visitors can engross themselves in the beauty and serenity of nature.
