The California Spring Trials took place last month. Along the California coastline, more than 40 companies, mostly breeders, showcased their new, existing, and potential varieties as well as new concepts. Individually, with colleagues or clients, or in large organized groups in different settings, growers, brokers, retailers, plant buyers (and more) traveled to California. Also, Express Seed Company. With a group of 70, including salespeople and customers, they visited the different locations and selected a top 20 of annuals and a top 10 of perennials.

Express Seed Company and Customer Team CAST 2024

“Express has close relationships with the growers we serve. After a busy 3 days of traveling together (sometimes on the move from 6:00 AM to 22:00 PM most days), we spent an extra half-day together at the end of CAST. Our sales team each takes a breeder location and goes through a review, then together with our honored guests, our customers, we vote/discuss/compromise together to develop a list of top introductions from breeders in Annuals and Perennials categories. We also have a long list of honorable mentions that each attendee takes away feedback to their territory if regionally important new variety. We find that this discussion and collaboration together between our sales team and growers gives us an objective view of what introductions are important to focus on and make sure all customers hear about in the coming season. It’s a fun, albeit grueling, week and process, but the result is an invigorated sales team, excited customer group, and optimism for the coming year”, says Scott Rusch of Express Seed Company.
