Van Nifterik:

Fruithof has embarked on a new venture with a climbing cane from Van Nifterik, known as a ‘carbonized’ cane. This particular treatment gives the bamboo cane a beautiful, natural look without the need for paint or wax. Additionally, the cane becomes harder and more resistant to mold.

Wiggert Jan Wijngaarden, CEO of De Fruithof, has initiated a trial with 500,000 cane. So far, the trial has been satisfactory. “In recent years, we used green cane, which come in two types: lacquered or waxed. We never used the lacquered version because it’s not cost-effective and it’s more environmentally damaging. However, the waxed version we used is much more susceptible to mold and thus becomes unsightly quickly.”

In search of a solution, Fruithof discovered this caramelized cane. “Caramelizing the cane removes the sugars, reducing mold issues. Additionally, this cane has a more natural appearance than the green cane. Now, Van Nifterik offers two varieties: a ‘regular’ caramelized cane and a caramelized and treated cane. The first yields a good result, but you’re not completely mold-free; with the second, you practically have no mold. In the summer, we will decide which option we will choose for next year.”

According to Erik van Wijk, account manager at Van Nifterik, this cane has been used by vegetable plant growers in other countries for some time. “Only recently have we started introducing it to other crops, and we see that interest from the Dutch market is growing.”
